Biological diversity

Chemnitz City Council decided to join the Alliance for Biodiversity in 2010

Die Stadt Chemnitz ist seit 2010 Mitglied im Bündnis für biologische Vielfalt

At the beginning of 2010, Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation launched an initiative to preserve nature in urban areas even better in future and to provide a near-natural habitat for many plant and animal species.

Local authorities were given the opportunity to participate in active action with a voluntary commitment via a "Declaration on the Conservation of Biological Diversity". The city of Chemnitz is one of 143 municipalities throughout Germany that had signed this declaration by May 2010. Leipzig, Erfurt, Jena and Magdeburg, among others, have also signed up.

In doing so, the signatory municipalities have committed themselves to specifically strengthening local biodiversity. In concrete terms, this means

  • Preserving and developing near-natural green and open spaces in residential areas,
  • Developing intelligent public transport concepts and thus avoiding the expansion of transport areas, which results in the fragmentation of natural areas within and close to settlements,
  • concrete contributions to the protection of rare and endangered animal and plant species in the city, such as the preservation and creation of breeding sites for swifts and kestrels,
  • securing land in view of climate change by designating nature conservation areas.

By joining, the city of Chemnitz is sending a positive signal for the preservation of biodiversity, i.e. the preservation of the diversity of plants and animals, the genetic diversity of species among each other and the diversity of habitats and biotopes.
