Keeping exotic animals

Many animal and plant species are endangered or even threatened with extinction worldwide. International and national agreements and regulations are used to monitor trade and captive breeding. The aim is to prevent illegal trade and thus ensure the survival of protected species in their natural habitat. These regulations apply to buyers or keepers of, for example, numerous species of tortoises, parrots, snakes, chameleons and some orchids.
A search in the species protection database "WISIA" of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) can clarify whether the species to be purchased is protected. There is a reporting obligation for vertebrates of specially protected species. For vertebrates of numerous strictly protected species, EU certificates are also required, which must be handed over to you by the dealer or breeder at the time of purchase. You can find out from the seller or the City of Chemnitz which documents need to be submitted as part of the inventory report. There are further legal regulations for breeders.
Stock notification/deregistration
The City of Chemnitz must be notified in writing of the keeping of such animals using the form "Bestandsanzeige/-abmeldung" if the owner is resident in Chemnitz or the animal lives here. This applies to both the acquisition and the disposal of animals.
Please send the form to Stadt Chemnitz, Umweltamt, Untere Naturschutzbehörde, 09106 Chemnitz or by e-mail.
