Hornets and bumblebees

Hornets and bumblebees are no reason to panic! They fulfil important tasks in the cycle of nature. As they have become very rare, they are under special protection. Due to a lack of natural nesting opportunities (tree hollows, cavities in stone piles or walls), it is becoming increasingly common for them to build their nests in or on buildings. Larger cavities in roofs and wall panelling as well as dark niches in storerooms or garden sheds and under roof overhangs are in demand. Observing the imposing appearance of up to 3.5 cm long, intensely buzzing hornet queens or bumblebee queens in your own garden or building commands respect from the observer. In addition, there is the worry of how coexistence with a bumblebee or hornet colony will be over a longer period of time. In most cases, however, peaceful coexistence is possible if a few important rules of behaviour are observed. The animals are simply following their instincts to fulfil their most important task, the preservation of the species.

Sometimes the nesting location is so unfavourably chosen that the nesting site cannot be maintained. In these rare cases, an official licence can be applied for to remove the nest professionally, as the Nature Conservation Act prohibits the destruction of the nesting sites of these specially protected species.
