Nature conservation volunteering

In addition to authorities and organisations, volunteers take care of many nature conservation tasks. They monitor, observe and document protected areas and protected biotopes, plants and animals. They record special species such as kestrels and check their nesting sites.
During the spring migration of amphibians, protective fences are erected and maintained. Nature conservation assistants help to look after the City of Chemnitz's nature conservation centre in the Adelsberg district and offer guided tours of the centre. The many information boards and nature trails in our city are maintained by volunteers. Last but not least, the volunteers help with practical maintenance measures such as mowing and clearing meadows, planting trees and planting hedges.
Without civic engagement, a large number of nature conservation measures would not be possible. Voluntary work in nature conservation is regulated by theSaxon Nature Conservation Act. Interested citizens can be appointed as voluntary nature conservation assistants for 5 years by the Lord Mayor on the recommendation of the nature conservation authority. The nature conservation authority supervises the volunteers and organises monthly training and information events in the form of lectures and excursions. All interested citizens can take part in these events free of charge.
There are around 68 nature conservation volunteers aged between 21 and 89 working in Chemnitz. Anyone interested in this important and interesting activity can obtain more information from the Environment Agency.
