Kappel district becomes a living neighbourhood

In 2019, an integrated neighbourhood concept was drawn up for the Kappel neighbourhood. The aim of this concept is to modernise the residential area and make it more liveable. To this end, a comprehensive package of measures was put together covering urban redevelopment, housing, demographics, social issues, mobility, green and open spaces, energy efficiency and climate protection.
In a second phase, this neighbourhood concept will be implemented by an energy refurbishment management team. In cooperation with the City of Chemnitz, Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft Chemnitz West eG has been tackling this challenge since 2022. Together with its energy efficiency experts Mr Karsten Sommer and his team, the ambitious goals are to be put into practice.
The neighbourhood will combine a modern living environment for young and old. Well-kept green areas with cosy resting places will invite people to linger. Space will also be created for leisure, play and recreation. Mobility options, including charging infrastructure, are also on the agenda. Sustainability, the integration of renewable energies and the conservation of resources are key aspects of the planning and realisation. Initial activities have already included the commissioning of a solar energy system to generate electricity and the construction of a cistern to store water. Two green façades contribute to the reduction of particulate matter.
