NUMIC measure: Graffiti walls
The measure

Chemnitz is colourful - as colourful as the 3 garage walls along the NUMICO model route, which were decorated with graffiti by artist Benjamin Sprunk alias Xin One in collaboration with the Altendorf secondary school and the "Johannes Trüper" special education centre during European Mobility Week.dagogical support centre "Johannes Trüper" with graffiti during the European Mobility Week. The colourful works can be seen from afar and are an absolute highlight for every road user.
The reasons:
Graffiti is no longer just unsightly smearings on house walls. Rather, they are an expression of a modern and youthful garage and mobility culture that, in the spirit of Chemnitz's nomination as European Capital of Culture 2025, shows that culture is diverse and has long had a place in Chemnitz outside of fixed cultural institutions. The inclusive project gave pupils the opportunity to actively help shape the urban space and deepen their knowledge in a workshop with an active artist. The beautiful graffiti not only show the diversity of Chemnitz, but also increase the attractiveness of the periphery as desired in the citizen surveys and, like theRainbow Bench, lift the mood on rainy days.
The process:
Graffiti may only be sprayed on specially labelled areas. Otherwise it is considered damage to property according to § 303 and § 304 StGB and can be punished with fines or imprisonment. Therefore, the owner of the walls, usually a garage association, must be contacted beforehand and their permission obtained. The garage communities usually support the spraying of legal graffiti, as complete motifs are often respected by other sprayers and the walls are thus protected from illegal graffiti.
