Akron is located in the north-east of the state of Ohio, approx. 50 km south of Cleveland, on the Cuyahoga River. The university city is the administrative centre of Summit County.

As the headquarters of the world-famous tyre manufacturers B. F. Goodrich Tire, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Firestone Tire and General Tire, Akron used to be known as the "Rubber Capital of the World". The two largest American airships "Akron" and "Macon" were also built by Goodyear in Akron. This was the cradle of the American truck industry.

Today, the "City of Inventions" is a recognised centre for polymer research and development in the world and an important location of the "Polymer Valley" in the state of Ohio. The city has been awarded the title "All-America City" three times.

The city's sights include the Quaker Square ensemble (including the Quaker Oats Co. grain silos converted into a hotel with 196 round rooms), the art museum and Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, the former mansion and estate of the Seiberling family. The annual All-America Soapbox Race, the LeBron James Bikeathon and the Hamburg Festival are attractive major events.

The city partnership provides the framework for numerous economic contacts, e.g. between the Technologie Centrum Chemnitz (TCC) and the Akron Incubator & Accelerator, where the first representative office of a Chemnitz company was opened in Akron in 2008. One of the highlights of the cultural exchange was the "Chriskindl Market Akron", which was jointly organised from 2004 to 2009. Athletes also travel across the "big pond" to take part in the legendary Akron Road Runner Marathon or the Chemnitz City Run. There are also contacts and exchanges between the art museums, zoos and in the field of road construction.
