Ljubljana (capital of Slovenia)

Twin town since 1966

Ljubljana is located between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea and is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe with only 278,000 inhabitants.

The university city is the cultural, economic and political centre of Slovenia. Ljubljana is home to a large number of theatres, museums and one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world.

The city is famous for its architectural monuments, including the castle, the town hall, the Franciscan church, the cathedral and the archbishop's palace, as well as for its well-preserved city centre.

Ljubljana has an important function as an international transport hub south of the Alps. The international airport is only 15 km north of the city centre. Ljubljana's economy has always been very diverse.

Industry is still the most important employer in the city (pharmaceutical industry, mineral oil industry and food processing). Ljubljana produces 25% of Slovenia's gross domestic product and has always focussed on long-term international economic relations.

The town twinning between Ljubljana and Chemnitz comes to life in sporting exchanges, youth encounters and cooperation in EU projects and international organisations. Numerous exhibitions and artist exchanges testify to the lively co-operation in the cultural and artistic field. Today, a sculpture by the Slovenian artist Simcic can be found on Chemnitz Castle Pond Island, which found a worthy place there in 1990 as a symbol of the friendship between the cities.
