Tampere (Finland)
Twin town since 1961

Tampere is located in the south-west of Finland and is the third largest city in the country.
Its favourable geographical location on the Tammerkoski rapids provided good conditions for rapid industrial development. The textile industry, mechanical engineering and vehicle construction made Tampere the most important industrial city in Scandinavia in the 19th and 20th centuries. Due to the diversity of its industry, Tampere is often referred to as the Manchester of the North.
Today, the lively university city is one of the most important scientific and economic centres in the Nordic countries. The vibrant centre offers visitors two theatres, numerous museums and galleries. The city has the Tampere Hall, the largest concert and congress centre in Northern Europe. The most famous open-air theatre in Finland is also located in Tampere.
Tampere has two harbours for passenger ships, sports boats and sailing boats. Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is located to the south-west of the city, near Pirkkala.
Chemnitz has been twinned with Tampere for the longest time. The parallels in the city's historical development provided a good starting point, as the textile industry and mechanical engineering have also characterised the city of Tampere in recent decades.
The town twinning between Chemnitz and Tampere forms the framework for a very lively exchange of athletes, artists, experts in a wide range of fields (administration, transport, work with senior citizens) and for joint EU projects. The Technical Universities of Chemnitz and Tampere also maintain lively and varied relations.
