Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi province and therefore the political, economic and cultural centre of the region.

It is the chemical and energy centre of the province, has rich mineral resources (50% of coal production in the whole of China) and is one of the most important Chinese industrial cities.

Major industries include steel, mechanical engineering, textiles, light industry, food, pharmaceuticals and precision metrology. Taiyuan Airport is one of the most modern in China.

Taiyuan has a history of over 2500 years. It was built under the name Jìnyáng in 497 BC on the Fen River and borders the mountains on three sides. The Jinci Temple complex in Taiyuan has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 1961. The Shuangta Si, one of the twin pagoda temples, has become the symbol of Taiyuan because of its peculiar architecture. Another main attraction is the stone cave in Tianlong Mountain, where you can see magnificent sculptures from the Tang Dynasty dating from 618 to 907.

The town twinning between Chemnitz and Taiyuan was initially revitalised by economic contacts and the exchange of official delegations. In 2000/2001, a Chinese business office was established in Chemnitz.

The highlight of the co-operation to date was the "Chinese Culture Days" in the Klaffenbach moated castle in 2001.
