Mulhouse is the capital of southern Alsace and is located in the border triangle of France, Germany and Switzerland.

As a pioneer of the industrial revolution in France, Mulhouse initially developed an important textile industry and later made a name for itself in the chemical and mechanical sectors. Today, PSA Peugeot Citroën is the largest employer in Alsace with over 10,000 employees.

Mulhouse is home to the Université de Haute-Alsace ("University of Upper Alsace") with its universities for chemistry, the textile industry and applied sciences.
The city's rich industrial past laid the foundations for a whole series of important museums, which have earned it the title of "European Capital of Technology Museums". The National Automobile Museum (Schlumpf Collection) stands out. Every year in July, Mulhouse becomes a Mecca for classic car fans during the automobile parade.

The historic city centre has been restored with great care. The town hall presents itself in the colourful Rhenish Renaissance style and the Saint-Etienne church is famous for its 14th century stained glass windows.

The 112 metre-high Europe Tower on Europaplatz square dominates the cityscape from afar. Mulhouse shares an important international airport, the EuroAirport, with its European neighbours Basel and Freiburg. The TGV Rhin-Rhône connects Mulhouse with Paris in around three hours travelling time.

The first friendly contacts between the two cities date back to the early 1960s. A friendship agreement "Charte d'amitié" was signed in 1981. In 1990, the mayors of the two cities sealed the twinning agreement with a contract.

Today, the relationship between Chemnitz and Mulhouse is characterised by youth and senior citizens' meetings, sports exchanges, joint EU projects and good economic relations.

40 years of town twinning between Chemnitz and Mulhouse

A delegation from the French twin city of Mulhouse visited Chemnitz from 11 to 13 October. The occasion was the 40th anniversary of the town twinning.

The programme included a tour of the city as well as visits to the industrial museum and the art collections. At the CVAG tram depot, a new tram was christened in the name of the twin city.

At the end of the visit, Mayor Michèle Lutz gave a short speech to the city council and signed the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz.
