Chemnitz celebrates 60 years of partnership with Tampere

Extensive programme in September and October 2022

Finnischer Nachmittag im Stadthallenpark

The city of Chemnitz has maintained friendly relations with the Finnish city of Tampere since 1961. This year we were finally able to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this town twinning. There were numerous opportunities to do so at the end of September:

The highlight was the Finnish afternoon in the Stadthallenpark on 1 October 2022 under the motto "Mölkky, Music, Makarra". From 3 p.m., visitors could try their hand at the Finnish wooden throwing game Mölkky as well as throwing rubber boots and finger hooks. In the wood-carving workshop of the Holzkombinat, visitors could make the wooden pieces needed for the game themselves. The city sports association organised the competition, with small prizes to be won.

Finnish music was also played that evening. The Köhler-Schimmel dance school invited guests to dance to Finnish tango. Participation and dancing was expressly permitted.

In the evening, the Jazzcompany Chemnitz played and invited reinforcements from Tampere. The musician Marko Aho from the Swing Doctors supported the band.

The exhibition "Terveisiä Tampereelta - Pictures from Chemnitz's twin city" gives a very personal impression of Tampere. Andreas Liese, who was in charge of the partnership as an employee of the city administration from 1990 to 2015, has brought along pictures from the city, which he visited this year for the first time without a work assignment.

Piha sauna in Zietenaugust

What would a Finnish day be without a sauna? In May of this year, a Piha sauna, a so-called self-built courtyard sauna, was constructed on the Sonnenberg in Chemnitz. It was built as a joint German-Finnish project by hard-working sauna fans from Chemnitz and Tampere. The delegation from Tampere is now officially taking over the sponsorship of this sauna project.

From 30 September to 1 October 2022, a delegation from the Finnish twin city of Tampere will also be visiting Chemnitz. Among them: Aleksi Jäntti, Deputy Mayor of Tampere. He was accompanied by the Director of Culture and Education Lauri Savi and staff from Visit Tampere.

To mark this festive occasion, a tram in the tram depot was christened with the name of the twin city on 30 September. The guests from Tampere also signed the city's Golden Book. This was followed by a reception in the town hall. The following day, the delegation visited the Garage Campus and the Chemnitz Art Collections, took part in the Finnish afternoon in the Stadthallenpark and took over the sponsorship of the Piha sauna on Sonnenberg.
