Lessingplatz
Lessingplatz is part of the urban development framework plan for southern Sonnenberg. The listed Wilhelminian-style square is being comprehensively upgraded, with new seating and numerous play and sports facilities for jumping, balancing and climbing, among other things. New elements for skaters are also being created, which will make Lessingplatz more attractive for young and old in future. The redesign of the square is the result of extensive public participation.
Play areas opened at Lessingplatz

The play areas on the east-west axis of Lessingplatz were opened on 23 August 2024. In addition to new seating elements, Lessingplatz has been given a variety of play and sports facilities for jumping, climbing and balancing. New equipment elements have also been added to existing play areas.
Implementation of the remaining work is planned for autumn 2024: Five trees will be planted in the new play niches, the opening beds to the square to the north, south and east will be reworked and replanted and the two new table tennis tables will be installed on the north-east axis. Individual sections of Lessingplatz will then be cordoned off again for a short time.
Lessingplatz is part of the urban development framework plan for the southern Sonnenberg and the intervention area of the North-East Citizens' Platform for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 (public square). The construction costs amount to around 220,000 euros. The work is being carried out by Garten- und Landschaftsbau Herfurth GmbH. Construction supervision is being carried out by the planning office MAY Landschaftsarchitekten PartG mbB.
Lessingplatz is dominated by two central axes, which divide it into four neighbourhoods. It is therefore planned to dismantle and rebuild the wooden walkway in each of the neighbourhoods individually and one after the other.
moreStart of construction work

Construction work on Lessingplatz will begin on Monday, 17 June 2024. New equipment elements will be added to the existing play areas. The opening beds on both sides will be replanted. As the construction work will primarily focus on the central play areas along the east-west axis, the majority of Lessingplatz will remain usable during the construction period. The construction costs amount to around 220,000 euros. The work is being carried out by Garten- und Landschaftsbau Herfurth GmbH. Construction supervision is being carried out by the planning office MAY Landschaftsarchitekten PartG mbB.
